Frankenstein - In 1816 Mary Shelley published her story of Victor Frankenstein creating a monster using pieces of dead bodies, connecting them and bringing them back to life. On the occasion of her story‘s 200th anniversery, it was task to create an object relating to the book‘s topic.
'Genesis' is a light-sculpture dealing with several of those topics. The DNA is the basic building block of human life and therefore our 'origin'.
To activate the object the whole sculpture has to be turned around. The DNA has to be 'brought' to life by turning it by 180°. The sculpture now undergoes a 'metamorphosis', defined as a major change in the appearance or character of someone or something: in the (now) top socket integrated UV-LEDs turn on resulting in the fluorescent liquid in the acrylic glass tubes to shine in a toxic green. At the same moment two metal balls inside the tubes are sinking down. When reaching the bottom, they activate a gear motor inside the lower socket, causing the whole object to rotate around its own axis. The DNA is now 'alive'. To turn off the light-sculpture it has to be turned back around by 180°. The UV-LEDs go out and the metal balls sink back down.
